Where do men get the idea that works cannot save you?

Error regarding the doctrine of Christ is always someone perverting the existing gospel of Christ (Gal. 1:7). God is not the author of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33). If confusion arises from the Word of God, someone is teaching something different than what the Lord revealed through the Spirit. An example is Hymenaeus and Philetus. These men taught that the resurrection was already passed (2 Tim. 2:18). What was the end result of their teaching? They were overthrowing the faith of some Christians. What is the origin of faith? It is the Word of God (Rom. 10:17). Hence, these men corrupted what God had revealed and changed it to suit their purposes.

Those who love the Word of God find the answer in James 2:24. Man is justified by works and not by faith only. If one argues that works do not save then they argue against God. In the same way, Peter says that baptism saves (1 Peter 3:21). An individual who teaches that baptism does not save is in effect arguing against God. Language comes from God. Words have meanings and common sense requires us to understand the meaning of the words selected by God. God says that a man is justified by works. Do we have any trouble understanding what justifies means? One does not have to know the Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic languages to know that if one is justified they are made right with God.

Error comes in because men like Hymenaeus and Philetus change the Word to suit their purposes. You do not find “faith only” in a good way in scripture. You do find It in a good way in the Baptist manual. Why do men continue to teach, faith only in a good way? Because it is necessary to keep the Baptist faith alive. The origin then of men saying that works cannot save you is from the mind of men and not from God. If we choose to be wise men it is because we accept the wisdom of God and not men (James 3:13-17).
