How much time do we need in bible study?

We generally have two periods of Bible study set aside each week by the church. Once on Sunday morning and again on Wednesday evening. On Sunday we have two periods of Bible study as we engage in worship. The church, in most places, provides this much time. It is becoming, sad to say, a trend among some to have just Sunday morning or a break up into homes on Sunday night. From the standpoint of elders having the job to feed the flock, it would seem in the best interest of all Christians to want more not less time to study the Bible together (Acts 20:28).

It would be very difficult to build the faith we need on the basis of twice a week. It would, therefore, stand to reason that what is needed is for each Christian to find the motivation to study at home. The church working with the Christian under these circumstances could work together, not alone, to build saving faith. The Bible is a library of some 66 books that is the mind of God to mankind. Some things are secret and no amount of study will provide answers to those areas that God has not revealed (Deut. 29:29). The things that are revealed can be known as one investigates the scripture with the right attitude (2 Tim. 2:15). The Christian needs to develop a love for each volume of scripture.

Our days are not the same and hence the activities of one day may be different than another. Some days you might cover more ground than others and other days less. Many years back I came across a book by Robert Taylor. In it he spoke of reading the New Testament 4 times a day for 15 minutes. Under that a person could read the entire New Testament in a month. If one read the New Testament in one month, then that would leave 11 months to read the 39 books of the Old Testament. In one year a person could read the whole Bible. Whatever method one chooses we should stay in the Word, daily. As we grow in maturity joy takes the place of just reading as we begin to understand the Word of God. How much? As much as you can possibly afford.
